he doesn't show it to john boehner. i don't think there is anything that obama, having a whiskey or mer lot is not going to change anything. boehner saw the numbers that we have been discussing and said let's get three months on this debt ceiling vote and chuck schumer said we are going to present a budget. that's not such a big deal except where they never present a budget. they don't want to come up with any of the hard choices. every time the democrats do something as obama did on medicare, it's death panels. you have to somehow join hands in order to be able to do this. all the cuts that obama made to medicare, he got blasted for by republicans. >> right. >> good point. >> he got blasted for them by romney. not all the republicans. >> he did decide to use that money to start an entitlement program. it would have been nice to move that money to the side. we will see what happens. you are right. everyone will have to join hands and make the tough choices. the bigger the deal, the better the chance to get involved. >>

. >> they can either have a gun control law pass under john boehner's speakership or stick their heads in the sand and have it pass under nancy pelosi's speakership. they're playing -- it's the long play. >> i have a question for you. what do you think the polls would have shown before "madd" was organized to have a campaign against drunk driving about whether you could have an open container in your car or whether it's wise to drive after having a couple shooters in a bar. or whether you're going somewhere and somebody in the back seat has a six-pack. what do you think the polls would say about that? >> all of that matters. and i think what the -- undertone of what the president was saying, he has to marshal this kind of cultural battle. it's not automatic. we can sit here in midtown manhattan where everybody would agree with us. but outside of here, not everybody does. in fact, there is an amazing statistic that shows that 23% of people in our poll call the availability of guns as the cause of gun violence compared with 37% who pointed to parenting and 37% who talked about public cul

john boehner has an 18% approval rating. the tea party, 9% approval rating. this is a movement, this is a party in retreat and that's why the president did what he did yesterday. >> let's look at that. best case scenario would be to have two strong parties and a great national conversation and great sense of balance. i understand how you could read the speech as i won, ha-ha, and also, could be seen as this is what the country is telling me. how do we get the other points of view in there. maybe perhaps -- this is the hard part, extract what i think is dying and what i think you think is dying, that is the extremist part of that. >> the extreme part of the republican party is in retreat and just as bill buckley chased john birchers out of the conservative movement in the 1960s, so, too, will these extremists be chased out of the mainstream of the republican party. they will evolve or they will die. it's that simple. i'm not so sure the president can say, katty kay, this is what the american people talked about and told me du

you can say if you're john boehner, well, that's fantastic. democrats, this is a democratic -- this is a democratic plan. you guys want it. it's a priority for you. guess what? you control the senate. you guys -- you guys pass global warming in the legislation in the senate, then we'll look at it in the house. gay marriage, fantastic. we are open to whatever you pass. that's your top priority, great. why don't you guys in the senate pass it, and then we'll look at it. and you can do the same thing with gun control, actually an issue that matters a great deal to me. actually, not gun control but assault weapons control. again, do what they did before. pass that in the senate and let them do that and say, but i'll tell you what we're going to focus on. we're going to focus on the house on getting people back to work, saving entitlement programs, and taking care of the crushing debt and making the tax code simpler, making the tax code fair. we're going to take care of the meat and potatoes issues over here. we're going to take care of making soci

majority leader harry reid and speaker john boehner appear to be in a game of legislative chicken. boehner's spokesman released a statement after the president's speech saying, simply, house committees of jurisdiction will review these recommendations and if the senate passes a bill, we will also take a look at that. reid, of course, who has already said the senate will only consider legislation that can pass the house said in a very vague, carefully-worded statement yesterday, quote, i am committed to ensuring that the senate will consider can legislation that addresses gun violence and other aspects of violence in our society early this year. reid, of course, has home state politics to worry about, as well as keeping a number of red state democrats in line. many of them are up for re-election in 2014. potentially vulnerable. montana senator max baucus responded to the senate in a statement, quote, before passing new laws, we need a debate that respects responsible, law-abiding gun owners in montana instead of a one-size-fits-all directives from washington. joe manchin said, quote
